On Saturday April 9th a showcase battle between JHHA and Simply Swagg Dance Studio from Scarborough was organized at the infamous Freestyle Sessions. Freestyle Sessions is a travelling Breaking Battle Series that travels all around the world with championship finals each year. Mr. Gabe, Ethan and Rafa under the guidance and training of Mr. Jelani and Ms. Jade prepared three 30 second rounds for the boys to show off their best moves and commandos. During the Battle however it was evident that organizers had accidently given Simply Swagg different time limits and number of rounds, resulting in our boys unexpectedly having to battle more rounds than we thought. Luckily even though the other side had plenty more commandos in store for us our boys held their own freestyling solo and doing an excellent job representing JHHA and our breaking program! It was a fun event and the boys got to do their first interview with ROGERS Television who was there to cover the event and participate in the cyphers that followed with the Canadian Breaking community.
On February 11th a troupe of our Mini to Senior Girls ages 8-19 travelled to the Holt Renfrew flagship store in Toronto to perform at a private ‘ALL Together at Holts’ NBA All Star weekend party with Raptors Player Corey Joseph. Our girls performed two Routines, in different locations throughout the party, with Raptors DJ 4 Korners. Our Girls did an excellent job, impressing party guests and had the opportunity to meet Corey Joseph!
To make up for technical failures in the music on our last visit to CP 24 Studios, On January 28th CP 24 sent Jamie Gutfreund up to JHHA to interview Ms. Jade and for dancers to give a live performance from our studio. We then got to teach Jamie some moves and decided to teach him a combo to ‘bet you can’t do it like me’. We had a blast and want to thank CP 24 for their ongoing support and opportunities for our students to showcase their talents.
Saturday January 16th we performed our K.O.D Showcase, Sunday afternoon Dance Weekend and by Sunday January 17th night our Bboys and Ms. Jade were in workshops with Mr. Wiggles and Ynot. It was a busy weekend but it’s not every day that the OG’s are in town! The boys were by far the youngest participants in the class but kept up. Mr. Isaiah especially impressed Mr. Wiggles catching on to his choreography the fastest and performing it with lots of heart and soul. It was a successful end to a very hectic weekend.
On Sunday January 17th JHHA Performance Company presented their first ever full scale Musical Theatre Hip Hop Production. With the help of legendary world renowned Toronto DJ Starting from Scratch who created the 25 minute sound track with Ms. Jade, combining the original Wizard of Oz with the 1978 remake with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. JHHA PC along with J Mix who played the adorable but very intense munchkins delivered a spectacular performance of “Brand New Day” at the Harbourfront Centre Fleck Dance Theatre.
Our Very own Ms. Madison was also the recipient of the prestigious Jacque Fosier Youth Dance Award for her outstanding work as a teacher and volunteer with the Dance Ontario Youth Board.
On one of the biggest International Street Dance Competitions came to Toronto. K.O.D (Keep On Dancing) held its first ever Qualifiers in Canada. OG’s and Pioneers Mr. Wiggles (Electric Boogaloos, Rock Steady Crew) Suga Pop (Electric Boogaloos, Rock Steady Crew), Link (Elite Force), Ynot (Rock Steady Crew), Tash (Wattsoul, LockUnity,FlowRock) were on hand to judge. Un able to compete in the 4 v 4 Popping, Locking, Hip Hop or Breaking battles because of rehearsals for Brand New Day (which we performed the next day) Ms. Jade did not want to miss the opportunity for students to showcase their up and coming talent and what they have been working on. After a full day at the studio starting at 9:30am, followed by Brand New Day Rehearsals till 6:00pm, J Crew, Ms. Jade, Mr. Isaiah and the Coroza’s headed to Daniel’s Spectrum in Toronto for 8pm to do a showcase performance. While the group wowed, and impressed the legendary judges host Lenny Len did something unexpected.
After interviewing dancers, he challenged the two youngest members of J Crew both 7yrs old to an on the spot battle. What he didn’t know and what no one in the audience expected was that in addition to performing choreography the boys knew how to battle. By the end of the battle the room went wild and judges Link, Tash and Mr. Wiggles tasked by Lenny to choose a winner. Rafa won and Ms. Jade received praises from the OG’s for her work as teacher that night and over the next few days in workshops.
Early Saturday January 16th Morning CP 24 invited JHHA to come down to their studio’s to talk about and promote the 3 day Dance Weekend’16 Festival on CP 24 Breakfast. Ms. Jade had the chance to sit down and speak to Nneka Elliot, who’s interviewed us and danced with us on the show in the past for a great conversation about JHHA’s achievements and the upcoming show. Five J Mix dancers also performed segments of our brand new day production on the show to give audiences. There were a few technical difficulties with the music, which during a life show meant, dancers could not hear their cue to start but our dancers prevailed as professionals and kept going.
